　　It said to a turtle that lived in the East Sea, "I am so happy! When I go out, I jump about on the railing beside the mouth of the well. When I come home, I rest in the holes on the broken wall of the well. If I jump into the water, it comes up to my armpits and holds up my cheeks. If I walk in the mud, it covers up my feet. I look around at the wriggly worms, crabs and tadpoles, and none of them can compare with me. Moreover, I am lord of this trough of water and I stand up tall in this shallow well. My happiness is full. My dear sir, why don"t you come often and look around my place?"

　　Before the turtle from the East Sea could get its left foot in the well, its right knee got stuck. It hesitated and retreated. The turtle told the frog about the East Sea. "Even a distance of a thousand li cannot give you an idea of the sea"s width; even a height of a thousand ren cannot give you an idea of its depth. In the time of King Yu of the Xia dynasty, there were floods nine years out of ten, but the waters in the sea did not increase. ln the time of King Tang of the Shang dynasty there were droughts seven years out of eight, but the waters in the sea did not decrease. The sea does not change along with the passage of time and its level does not rise or fall according to the amount of rain that falls.

　　The greatest happiness is to live in the East Sea."

　　After listening to these words, the frog of the shallow well was shocked into realization of his own insignificance and became very ill at ease.

　　它對(duì)從東海中來的大鱉說：“我多么快樂啊!出去玩玩，就在井口的欄桿上蹦蹦跳跳，回來休息就蹲在殘破井壁的磚窟窿里休息休息;跳進(jìn)水里，水剛好托著我的胳肢窩和面頰;踩泥巴時(shí)，泥深只能淹沒我的兩腳，漫到我的腳背上。回頭看一看那些赤蟲、螃蟹與蝌蚪一類的小蟲吧，哪個(gè)能同我相比哪一天!并且，我獨(dú)占一坑水，在井上想跳就跳，想停就停，真是快樂極了!您為什么不常來我這里參觀參觀呢?”

　　海鱉左腳還沒踏進(jìn)井里，右腿已被井壁卡住了。于是，它在井邊徘徊了一陣就退回來了，把大海的景像告訴青蛙，說道：“千里的確很遠(yuǎn)，可是它不能夠形容海的遼闊;千仞的確很高，可是它不能夠控明海的深度。夏禹的時(shí)候，10年有9年水災(zāi)，可是海水并不顯得增多;商湯時(shí)，8年有7年天旱，可是海水也不顯得減少。永恒的大海啊，不隨時(shí)間的長(zhǎng)短而改變，也不因?yàn)橛炅康亩嗌俣鴿q落。這才是住在東海里最大快樂啊!”

　　淺井的青蛙聽了這一番話，惶恐不安，兩眼圓睜睜地好像失了神。深深感到自己的渺小。

　　There was once a frog who made his home in a shallow well. One day he met a turtle from the East Sea.

　　從前有只青蛙，在淺井里居住。一天，它遇見一只從東海來的大鱉。

　　"I"m extremely happy!" the frog told the turtle. "When on the ground, I would leap up and down the railing of the well. When I"m tired, I would rest on the broken bricks."

　　井蛙對(duì)大鱉說：「我真是樂透了!高興時(shí)，便在井欄上跳躍。疲倦時(shí)，就躺在破磚上休息。

　　"Back in the water, I would swim with only my head above the surface. When I walk in the mud, I would bury my feet. I look back at the worms, crabs, and tadpoles who share my well. They can"t be as happy as I am."

　　回到水里，我只是露出我的頭游泳。跳到泥里，我則埋沒我的雙腿。我回頭看看井里的赤蟲、蟹和蝌蚪。它們可不及我快樂呢!

　　"The pool of water belongs to me because the well is mine. This is the greatest pleasure!" the frog said proudly. "You should come visit me some time!"

　　井水是我，因?yàn)檫@口井屬于我，這就是最大的喜樂啊!你有空不妨來探望我。」

　　The turtle went with the frog to the shallow well. Lifting his right foot, he tried to enter the well. But it got stuck even before he could extend his left one, so he leisurely retreated.

　　大鱉聽了，就跟著井蛙入井里，怎知左腳還未伸進(jìn)??去，右腳已經(jīng)絆住了，于是便從容地退了出來。

　　Rather amused, the turtle said, "I can"t tell you how vast the East Sea is, for it is beyond measure. However, flood doesn"t increase its depth the least bit, and drought can"t make it lose an inch . Its depth does not change with time, nor does it change with the amount of rainfall. This is its greatest pleasure!"

　　大鱉給逗樂了，便對(duì)青蛙說：「東海的大，我無法給你描，因?yàn)槟鞘菬o法測(cè)量的。水災(zāi)既不能增加它的深度，旱災(zāi)也不能減少它一吋。它的深度，是不會(huì)因時(shí)間的長(zhǎng)短，或兩量的多少而有所改變。這就是東海最大的喜樂啊!」

　　On hearing the turtle, the frog was dumbfounded.

　　井蛙聽了，驚訝得呆一邊。
